# Manage Your Domain, DNS and Email

> Choose nameservers, switch to your provider’s DNS, forward a website and set up Google Workspace from your customer account.

Sign in to the **business that manages your domain**, open **My services**, and select the domain. The **Domain** tab shows its registration information and nameservers. Depending on the business's setup, you can also use **DNS** and **Forwarding**.

The primary customer, enabled customer administrators and operations contacts can change DNS settings. Billing and viewer contacts have read-only DNS access. If an action is missing, contact the business.

## Choose DNS when ordering a new domain

| Option | Where you manage DNS |
| - | - |
| **Manage DNS through the business** | Your provider configures the domain's assigned nameservers after payment. Manage records in your customer account. |
| **Use your own nameservers** | Enter two different nameserver hostnames, such as `ns1.example.net` and `ns2.example.net`. Continue managing DNS with that provider. |

A new domain can start with an empty DNS zone. You can add website or mail records later. Registration and nameservers alone do not create a website or mailbox.

## Switch an existing domain to your provider's DNS

**1. Prepare DNS and forwarding**

Open the domain's **Domain** tab and select **Prepare DNS and forwarding**. This prepares DNS management without changing your current nameservers.

**2. Copy the settings you need**

Open **DNS** and copy required records from your current DNS provider. Include website addresses, mail records, verification TXT, DKIM and any subdomains you use. Preparation does not automatically import these records.

For a redirect-only domain, you can configure **Forwarding** instead. An empty zone is also allowed if you do not need website or mail services yet.

**3. Review the nameservers**

Return to **Domain** and choose **Review nameserver switch**. Check the current nameservers, new nameservers and prepared record count.

**4. Confirm the switch**

Confirm that all required records have been copied and checked, or that they are not needed. Select **Switch nameservers now**. The button shows progress and the result appears in the Domain tab.

> [!WARNING]
>
> If you currently use the domain for a website or email, copy the relevant records before switching. A switch to an empty or incomplete zone can interrupt those services.

If the preview reports active **DNSSEC**, disable the existing registry DNSSEC using the available Domain controls or ask your provider for help. Create a fresh preview afterwards. You can enable DNSSEC again once managed DNS is active.

A preview expires after ten minutes. If you edit records or nameservers, review the switch again before confirming. Nameserver changes and DNS caches take time to propagate; preparing a zone is different from activating it.

## Add or edit DNS records

Open **DNS** to view the current records. Use **Add Record**, the edit button or the delete button as needed. **Refresh** reloads records from the DNS provider.

| Record | Common use |
| - | - |
| A / AAAA | Connect a hostname to a website or server IP address. |
| CNAME | Point a hostname to another hostname. |
| MX | Route incoming email to a mail provider. |
| TXT | Add domain verification or email authentication values, such as SPF and DKIM. |

Use the exact values supplied by your hosting or email provider. Keep verification records and existing mail settings unless you know they are no longer required. Do not create multiple SPF records at the same hostname.

You can prepare records while the zone awaits activation. They become public after the domain uses the assigned nameservers and DNS activates.

## Set up Google Workspace email

1. Open **DNS → Google Workspace → Preview mail settings**.
2. Review the proposed records. For new setups, the template uses `smtp.google.com` as the MX destination with priority `1` and TTL **Auto**.
3. If MX records from another mail provider exist, review the replacement list and confirm that you want incoming mail to go to Google Workspace.
4. Choose **Apply Google Workspace template** and check the result.

The template adds Google's SPF record only if no SPF exists. Existing SPF remains unchanged: if it needs Google authorization, combine the required senders into one SPF record using your mail providers' instructions. Existing Google MX records, including legacy Google MX, are kept.

Your website records, verification TXT, subdomain mail records, DKIM and DMARC are preserved. A root CNAME that conflicts with mail records must be reviewed before the template can be applied.

> [!NOTE]
>
> You still need your own Google Workspace account. Get domain verification and DKIM values from **Google Admin**, add those TXT records separately with **Add Record**, then complete Gmail and DKIM activation in Google Admin. The template does not create mailboxes or verify your Google account for you.

## Forward your domain to another website

Open **Forwarding**, enter the complete destination URL, and choose:

* **301 Permanent** for a lasting move, or **302 Temporary** for a temporary redirect.
* **Preserve Path** to keep paths such as `/contact` in the destination.
* **Preserve Query String** to keep parameters such as `?ref=campaign`.

Save the forwarding settings and check the confirmation. If an existing root A record must be replaced, check the warning first: a website using that record will stop being served from that address.

If the domain still uses external nameservers, return to **Domain** to complete the switch. A prepared redirect only works publicly after nameserver activation. If your browser remembers an old redirect, test again in a private window after DNS has updated.

## If a change seems to do nothing

Check the message in the **Domain** tab and refresh the page to see the saved nameservers. The new nameservers may already be saved while public DNS still uses cached information.

If a confirmation expires or settings change, create a fresh preview. If the result cannot be confirmed, review the current nameservers before trying again. Contact the business with the domain name, action, time and exact message if the state is still unclear.
