# Tourist Tax

> Calculate tourist tax for a stay, collect the remaining amount with a one-time payment link, and export payment and nightly records

Tourist Tax helps accommodation owners calculate the levy for a booking, account for tax already collected elsewhere, and request the remaining amount from the guest. Each saved stay keeps its original inputs, calculation and tariff version.

Open **Collect → Tourist Tax** in your dashboard, or go directly to [Tourist Tax](https://payrequest.app/tourist-tax). The interface is available in English, Dutch, Spanish and French.

<Note>
  You can try the [public calculator](https://payrequest.io/free-tools/tourist-tax-calculator) without an account. Create a PayRequest account to save accommodation and stay records or collect payment. Dashboard actions currently require the account owner; team-member sessions cannot manage Tourist Tax.
</Note>

## Before collecting payment

You need:

* A completed PayRequest account setup.
* An active **Mollie** connection belonging to your account.
* An active payment page with a handle and **EUR** as its currency.
* A verified accommodation address, category and applicable local rules.
* Confirmation that no additional VAT needs to be charged on this separate tourist-tax payment.

Connect your provider through [Payment Providers](/payment-processing/setting-up-payment-providers). This Tourist Tax workflow currently collects through **Mollie only**; Stripe and PayPal are not supported for these links.

<Info>
  PayRequest calculates and collects the payment. The host remains responsible for checking exemptions, filing declarations and remitting tax. It does not register guest identities, scan passports, import PMS bookings automatically, or submit municipal returns.
</Info>

## Supported tariffs and periods

The preset applies to the accommodation's actual municipality and the nights of the stay, not simply the country or booking date. The departure day is not an overnight stay.

| Preset | Covered nights | Calculation |
| - | - | - |
| Amsterdam city | January 1–December 31, 2026 | 12.5% of the host-confirmed taxable stay price excluding VAT and tourist tax. Guest counts do not apportion that price automatically. |
| Barcelona city | April 1, 2026–March 31, 2027 | Regional category tariff plus the municipal surcharge, per taxable guest and taxable night; maximum seven nights. |
| Paris city, France pilot | January 1–December 31, 2026 | Fixed classified tariffs, or the capped proportional formula for unclassified accommodation, with separately calculated additional taxes. Taxe de séjour **au réel** only. |
| Your own verified local rule | Dates and applicability verified by the host | Simple per-guest/night, per-accommodation/night or percentage formulas. These are not automatically maintained local tariffs. |

A stay outside a preset's verified period is rejected. An arrival on December 31, 2026 with departure on January 1, 2027 has one overnight stay in 2026; departure on January 2 adds a night outside the Paris and Amsterdam coverage.

Use an official accommodation classification where required. Platform review scores and star ratings are not a substitute. Surrounding municipalities can have different rates.

### Barcelona exemptions and prepaid bookings

The host enters the exempt guest count. Guests aged **16 or under** are exempt in Barcelona. Verify other applicable exemptions separately. Occupancy and eligibility must remain unchanged throughout a stay calculated with this preset.

Fully prepaid Barcelona bookings are rejected because the tariff applicable at reservation can differ. Check the applicable rule before using a verified custom calculation. Do not split a booking into artificial stays to restart the seven-night limit.

### Paris: classification, exemptions and collection timing

The French pilot covers **Paris municipality, INSEE 75056**, not all of Île-de-France or France. It does not cover the **forfait** regime.

* Guests under **18** are exempt. Verify other exemptions, including relevant resident and seasonal-worker cases.
* Include exempt people in the **total occupant count** for the unclassified price calculation.
* Confirm unchanged accommodation-only net nightly price, occupancy and exemptions throughout the stay. If any change, verify the nights separately; the preset does not calculate changing nightly conditions.
* Collect during the stay, as specified by the [Paris tax portal](https://taxedesejour.paris.fr/). PayRequest prevents creating a Paris tax link before the saved arrival date and checks the date again when checkout starts.

For an unclassified or classification-pending property, the communal rate is **5% of the accommodation-only price excluding VAT, per occupant per night**, capped at **€4.90** before additions. The calculation divides the full accommodation price by the number of nights and **all occupants**, including exempt people. Round the communal amount to cents, then calculate and round each addition separately:

| Part | Basis |
| - | - |
| Communal | Fixed category rate, or the capped 5% unclassified calculation |
| Departmental | 10% of the communal part |
| SGP regional | 15% of the communal part |
| IDFM regional | 200% of the communal part |

Multiply the resulting per-person/night amounts by taxable guests and nights. The maximum combined unclassified tariff is **€15.93 per taxable guest per night** under this Paris 2026 preset.

Check the [official Paris 2026 tariff sheet](https://taxedesejour.paris.fr/includes/download/rv3R1V-Les-tarifs-en-vigueur-a-partir-du-1er-janvier-2026.pdf). A simple percentage custom rule does not replace this capped formula with separately rounded additions.

## Add an accommodation

<Steps>
  <Step title="Enter the accommodation">
    Enter the name and **Address and municipality**, then choose the tax jurisdiction. Confirm that the address lies inside the selected municipality.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Select the category or custom formula">
    Choose the official category for Barcelona or Paris. For a custom rule, select the calculation method and enter your verified rate with a decimal point.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Verify the VAT treatment">
    Confirm that no additional VAT is due on this separate payment, then click **Save accommodation**. Tourist Tax does not determine accommodation VAT or automatically add VAT to the levy.
  </Step>
</Steps>

If an accommodation was saved without VAT confirmation, use **Accommodation settings → Confirm VAT treatment** after completing the check. You can save calculations before confirming this; collection remains unavailable until confirmation.

## Calculate and save a stay

1. Select the accommodation and enter a recognizable **Booking reference**. A reference must be unique for that accommodation in your account.
2. Enter arrival and departure dates, **Total guests** and **Exempt guests**.
3. Enter the taxable price when required. Amsterdam and custom percentages use the complete applicable taxable basis. Unclassified Paris uses accommodation-only price excluding VAT and tourist tax.
4. Select the booking channel and enter **Tourist tax already collected elsewhere**.
5. For Paris, confirm unchanged nightly price, occupancy and exemptions. Check the preview and each tax part.
6. Confirm that you verified the jurisdiction, exemptions, basis and previous collection, then click **Save stay**.

<Warning>
  Check the booking statement before recording external collection. Airbnb collects tourist tax for relevant bookings in France, but the channel name alone does not prove collection for every location or booking. Request only the remaining amount. An externally collected amount greater than the calculated tax is rejected.
</Warning>

Saving a stay records the calculation. It does not collect payment or send the guest a message.

### Worked Paris example

Assume an unclassified property in Paris, three nights in 2026, four occupants including two exempt minors, and **€600** of accommodation-only price excluding VAT. Price, occupancy and exemptions remain constant.

The price per occupant per night is `€600 ÷ 3 ÷ 4 = €50`. The communal part is `5% × €50 = €2.50`, below the cap.

| Part | Per taxable guest per night | Two taxable guests × three nights |
| - | - | - |
| Communal | €2.50 | €15.00 |
| Departmental | €0.25 | €1.50 |
| SGP regional | €0.38 | €2.28 |
| IDFM regional | €5.00 | €30.00 |
| **Calculated tax** | **€8.13** | **€48.78** |

If **€10** was already collected by another party, the saved stay has **€38.78 remaining to collect**. This example is specific to the supported Paris 2026 tariff, not a France-wide formula.

## Create and share the payment link

Find the saved stay under **Collect and report**, then click **Create payment link**. For Paris, do this on or after arrival, during the stay. Copy the guest link and send it through an appropriate channel.

The link uses the remaining amount from the saved calculation and accepts one successful payment. Repeating the create action returns the same link. An entirely covered stay shows **Nothing to collect** and needs no new request.

The guest page shows the accommodation, booking reference, stay dates, tax breakdown, externally collected amount and remaining amount. The guest enters their name and email, chooses an available Mollie payment method and completes payment. A tourist-tax payment charges money; it is separate from a [security-deposit authorization](/payment-processing/security-deposits).

<Note>
  The booking platform's terms still apply. Creating a PayRequest link does not make an external payment request permitted or necessary for an Airbnb, Booking.com or other platform booking.
</Note>

### Guest message template

> Hello \[name], the tourist tax for \[accommodation], booking \[reference], from \[arrival] to \[departure] is \[total]. We have recorded \[already collected] collected by another party, leaving \[remaining amount]. Please pay that remaining amount through \[secure link] at \[permitted collection time]. This is tourist tax, separate from any security deposit. Contact \[host contact] before paying if the dates, guest count or amount need correction.

Replace every field and verify the permitted collection time. For the Paris example, total is €48.78 and remaining amount is €38.78.

## Check payment and handle retries

Use the linked **Paid transactions** amount and the underlying transaction records. A saved calculation, sent link or pending payment is not proof of payment. Paid summaries count positive linked EUR transactions with confirmed paid status and a payment timestamp.

If a payment has already been prepared, the existing provider payment is reused when available. If preparation is uncertain, checkout asks the guest to contact the host. Review the existing invoice and transaction before agreeing another collection attempt.

Provider and platform fees do not reduce the tax owed to the authority. Reconcile tax collected, fees, refunds and remittance separately.

## Export records

The **Arrival month** selector controls the report period. The two exports apply that period differently:

| Export | Included records | Purpose |
| - | - | - |
| **Export CSV** | Stays whose arrival falls in the selected month, including cancelled stays | Original calculation, external collection, requested amount, gross linked paid transactions and rule version |
| **Paris register CSV** | Nights falling in the selected month for saved Paris stays, including stays arriving in a previous month and cancelled stays | An aid for reviewing nightly records and the four calculated tax parts |

The Paris register aid includes accommodation and address, INSEE code, booking reference, night and stay dates, category, occupants, exemptions, taxable guests, entered whole-stay accommodation price, each tax part, rule version and cancellation information.

<Warning>
  The register contains **calculated tax**, not a certified record of tax actually collected. External collection and paid-transaction values refer to the **whole stay** and repeat on each nightly row. Do not sum those repeated values as monthly collection totals. Check actual collection dates, refunds and corrections before declaring or remitting.
</Warning>

For example, a stay arriving September 29 and departing October 3 is absent from the standard October arrival export. The October Paris register contains the nights of October 1 and October 2.

Neither export is an automatic municipal return, an approved import format for every tax portal, or a net-remittance statement.

## Cancel a stay

Choose **Cancel stay** to retain the calculation and disable its payment link. Cancellation does not delete the assessment and does not refund existing payments. Cancelled stays remain in exports so you can review the history.

For incorrect dates, amounts or exemptions, stop further collection and review any existing payment before preparing a corrected calculation. Handle refunds and adjustments separately through the relevant payment records and local declaration procedure.

## Fees and limits

Tourist Tax currently has no additional feature-specific plan gate. Normal payment pricing applies:

* **Free:** 2% standard platform fee, capped at €25 per successful payment.
* **Premium:** €5/month with 0% standard platform fees while the plan is active.
* **Business:** €20/month with 0% standard platform fees while the plan is active.

Provider fees and commission-payment exceptions remain separate. See [PayRequest Plans](/business-settings/payrequest-plans).

## Official sources

Rates were checked on **October 12, 2026**. Saved calculations keep their tariff version; a later rule update does not rewrite a previous stay.
