Pay by Bank lets customers pay from their bank account without entering card details. PayRequest redirects them to Mollie to choose their bank and authorize the payment in their banking app or online banking. For an automatically collected euro subscription, the first payment establishes a SEPA Direct Debit mandate. Later payments are collected through that mandate.
Pay by Bank is the first-payment method. Subscription renewals use SEPA Direct Debit, with its usual processing times and refund rights. This is not recurring open banking or Variable Recurring Payments (VRP).

Enable Pay by Bank

1

Connect your Mollie account

Open PayRequest’s payment-provider settings and connect your own Mollie account. See Setting Up Payment Providers.
2

Activate the methods at Mollie

Enable Pay by Bank on the Mollie website profile used by PayRequest. For automatic euro subscriptions, also enable SEPA Direct Debit. Availability depends on your Mollie account and profile.
3

Check your PayRequest method selection

If you selected specific payment methods in PayRequest, include Pay by Bank in that selection. Activating a method at Mollie does not override your PayRequest selection.
4

Use an automatic subscription checkout

Share your recurring product’s PayRequest Page or portal product link. Eligible customers can choose Pay by Bank when setting up automatic payments. Manual invoice billing does not establish a mandate; review the product and shop’s manual-payment settings if checkout offers only a one-time payment.

What the customer does

  1. Reviews the product, amount and recurring terms in PayRequest.
  2. Chooses Pay by Bank and continues to Mollie.
  3. Selects their bank on the Mollie payment page.
  4. Authorizes the first payment in their bank’s app or online banking.
  5. Returns to PayRequest to see the payment status.
The customer chooses the bank after leaving PayRequest. Their billing-address country does not automatically select a bank: someone may have a bank account in a different country. The checkout language changes the interface text, not the payment method itself.

Supported payments

Bank availability can vary. Some business bank accounts are not supported. See Mollie’s Pay by Bank documentation for current coverage and limitations.

Pending payments and returns from the bank

Returning from the bank does not prove that payment is complete. A Pay by Bank payment can remain pending while Mollie waits for the funds. PayRequest confirms payment after Mollie reports it as paid. Some banks may take longer than others.
If the bank or bank-connection provider displays a blank page or an error after authorization, check the order and payment status before starting another payment. A payment can still succeed despite a return-page error. If the status is unclear, contact the merchant with your order number; the merchant can verify the payment in Mollie.

Manage future payments

The mandate is linked to the customer’s subscription. Use Managing Mandates to inspect its status and Payment Methods for Subscriptions to manage collection. Canceling a subscription and refunding its first payment are separate actions. Customers can use the available self-service cancellation options to stop future billing according to the product’s cancellation settings.

Troubleshooting

Check Mollie activation, your PayRequest method selection, and SEPA Direct Debit activation for subscriptions. The amount, currency and checkout’s collection settings must be suitable. The automatic subscription flow supports EUR.
Your shop or product may permit manual subscription billing. That checkout collects a separate payment for the invoice rather than establishing automatic renewal payments. Review subscription payment methods.
No. Only the first payment uses Pay by Bank. Renewals are SEPA Direct Debit payments and may remain pending while collection is processed.
No. Mollie handles bank selection and authorization on its payment page.
